Career Advancement Experiences of Mid-Career Women

A recent conversation with Suzanne Mosley Payne spotlights the difficulty middle aged mid-career women face as they navigate corporate careers, begin business ownership and even experience peri/menopause. We explore the topic of validation across these three shared experiences.

While my conversation with Suzanne occured in 2024, this book chapter was published in 2019 and sadly the topic remains to be a challenging experience for many women in places such as the US and UK.

Scholars have reported the intersectional identity of women faculty across African, Latinx, Asian, and Native American Diasporas has impacted their career advancement experiences and job satisfaction, or a positive response as a resultof a job being fulfilling, and in step with one’s values (Callister, 2006). However, little is known about the career advancement experiences of women facultyacross ethnic groups in mid-to-later career stages. This chapter explores howfaculty with intersectional identities experience workplace barriers, engage incareer decision-making and persist in the professoriate. Also discussed are thelimitations of mentoring and strain of workplace experiences on women faculty across African, Latinx, Asian, and Native American Diasporas. Read the full chapter here

Suzanne and I continue our conversation in an upcoming podcast episode of the Your Career Success with Suzi Mosley Payne. Stay tuned for the episode release to learn how you can confidently journey your mid-career and mid-life experiences.
